How We Resize a Ring: A Step-by-Step Guide From a Jeweler’s Bench
Rings hold deep sentimental value, they tell stories of love, milestones, and family history. Whether it’s an heirloom engagement ring or a new piece that just doesn’t fit quite right, resizing ensures comfort, security, and longevity.
At Seattle Jewelry Design & Repair, every ring resizing is done with precision, artistry, and respect for the original design. Here’s how we do it, and what you should know before resizing your own ring.
Why Would I Need to Resize My Ring?
Fingers naturally change over time due to weight fluctuations, aging, pregnancy, or even weather.
If your ring feels too tight, it can be uncomfortable or even impossible to wear.
If it’s too loose, you risk it slipping off and getting lost.
Resizing ensures your ring fits securely and comfortably so you can wear it every day without worry.
How Does a Jeweler Know if a Ring Can Be Resized?
Not all rings can be resized the same way.
Before any work begins, we inspect the ring carefully to determine:
The metal type (gold, platinum, silver, etc.) and karat
Whether there are stones that might be affected
The presence of engravings or intricate designs
How many sizes the ring needs to go up or down
Some styles, such as eternity bands or tension settings, may require specialized techniques or may not be resizable at all.
We’ll also measure the intended finger precisely with professional gauges (guessing a ring size never works!). If resizing is a surprise, try bringing in a ring that already fits the recipient’s correct finger.
How Do You Make a Ring Smaller?
There are two main ways to make a ring smaller:
1. Compressing the Band
Used only for plain bands and small adjustments (typically up to half a size). The band is gently compressed using specialized equipment.
2. Removing Metal
For larger size reductions or rings with gemstones:
We carefully cut the band at the back and remove a small section of metal.
The ends are joined, realigned, and soldered together.
The ring is reshaped to a perfect circle, then filed, sanded, and polished until the seam disappears.
After resizing, the result is seamless and the ring looks and feels brand new.
How Do You Make a Ring Larger?
To enlarge a ring, we can either stretch or add metal, depending on the design.
1. Stretching
For simple bands and small increases (up to half a size), we gently stretch the metal using a ring-expanding tool.
2. Adding Metal
For larger size increases or rings with stones:
The band is cut at the back, and a matching piece of metal is added.
The new section is soldered, filed, and sanded until smooth.
Finally, the ring is reshaped and polished to perfection.
Each step ensures the added section blends seamlessly with the original design.
What Happens After the Resizing Is Done?
After the band is resized, we complete a full inspection and finishing process, including:
Checking stone settings for stability
Polishing the entire ring for a smooth, uniform finish
Cleaning the ring in an ultrasonic bath to remove any residue
When done correctly, you’ll never be able to tell your ring was resized.
Are There Rings That Can’t Be Resized?
Some rings require alternative methods or extra care:
Engraved rings may need the engraving re-etched after resizing.
Antique or fragile rings require gentle handling and sometimes full shank replacements.
Eternity bands or certain designs can’t be resized traditionally, but we can often install sizing beads, springs, or adjustable inserts for a better fit.
Our jewelers will always walk you through your safest options before any work begins.
